Recoba – the star almost becomes great
Possessing outstanding left-wing contracts, once rated higher than Ronaldo, but former Uruguay goalkeeper Alvaro Recoba experienced a disproportionate career.
In a career spanning three decades, Recoba has never scored more than 16 goals, despite spending most of his time playing on the Inter Milan attack. However, on the 40th birthday of the Uruguayan, former president Inter Massimo Moratti insisted he “loves Recoba more than Ronaldo”.
It is also the common feeling of many interista, whether the level of playing or Recoba career can not match the former Brazilian player. The goals surprised the viewers, the magical and emotional moments he created on the football field.
Those are the reasons Recoba is beloved, in the sense that quality is more important than quantity. August 31, 1997 is a special day for Inter, Serie A and the football world.
Ronaldo is expected to become a trump card to help Inter step away from the shadow of neighbor AC Milan and win the scudetto for the first time since 1989. As soon as he stepped out of the tunnel, all the lenses and cameras were pointed at Inter’s rookie wearing the No.10 shirt.
But the match did not go as expected of the Brazilian superstar and his teammates. Being the focus of every Inter attack, Ronaldo was constantly attached and fouled by the opponent.
Things got worse for Inter when in the 73rd minute, Dario Hubner unexpectedly opened the scoring for Brescia. In an effort to renew the attack, coach Luigi Simoni brought in another South American rookie.
The 21-year-old recently played in his hometown of Uruguay, in the colors of Danubio and Nacional clubs. Believing he had found a genius, Mazzola quickly introduced the youngster to his friend Moratti.
Just five minutes later, Recoba completed his perfect debut with a goal that would become his trademark later. From the free kick point at a distance of about 35 meters right.
Even goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca had to run to congratulate his new teammate. If before the game, all eyes are on Ronaldo, then after the game, Recoba is the focus.
Ivan Zamorano joins the youth of Ronaldo, Recoba and another 1976-born player Nwankwo Kanu. But in the end, Inter was still short of breath on the championship track, and came second in Serie A, five points behind Juventus.
